Carsington Mince Pie Social Ride

Saturday 1st December

First time organiser Janet did a super job running and organising this sell out Christmas ride, together with her small team of helpers.

The wet weather meant we nearly had the car park and entire 13km track around the reservoir to ourselves!

Ruth Indiepics photos are now available to view on her website., and here are a few of her favourites together with some from Julie and John.

Hartington Hack – Sunday 2nd September

Thank you to Mark and team for organising this lovely ride.  Even the tractor run held at the pub opposite the venue just added to the event.

The water crossing was hugely popular, although I know a few did take the detour to avoid it.

The official photographer was Ruth Indiepics and here is one of her favourites .  See her website for all the others.

Stanage Social Ride – Sunday 22nd July

Thank you Sue, Flick and team for this brand new venue and social ride.  It was super enjoyable to have time to look and appreciate the beautiful English countryside.  I particularly enjoyed the gentle amble down the ancient hollow way and being able to explore a new part of Derbyshire.  I’m already looking forward to next year.

The scenery was stunning and the weather remained cloudy so was perfect for riding.

3 routes were available – 8km, 14km and 20km.  Map here –Stanage map

Ruth Indiepics was the official photographer and here are some of her favourites she’s shared with us.  See her website for all of them.

Here are some taken by riders and stewards on the day.  Lots more on our Facebook page.

Flash Social Ride 8th July 2018

In support of MADBAG – Matlock and District Bridleways Access Group

Start times were brought forward and we sent out our army of cheerful volunteers, from both EGB and MADBAG, with water for drinks and sloshes on route.  This proved successful all round with all 37 horses and riders coming in as fresh as daisies despite the very warm conditions.   Numbers were definitely down because of the hot weather, but we hope to run the ride again next year – with some route tweaks to make it even better.

Thank you to Caroline and Bobby for the use of the super large, flat and dry venue.

Two route were on offer 20km or 13km. and the map is here –Flash Ride Map

Photos are now available to purchase from Ruth Indiepics and here are a few of her favourites –

Shipley in Early Spring Social Ride – February 25th 2018

Sunshine! Another lovely ride in Shipley Park in glorious early spring sunshine.  Thank you Carol and team for another well organised, well marked and friendly ride.  This is a map of the routes that were available shipley-map-2017 and enjoyed by horses and riders on Sunday.

It was great to see so many of our brand new Derbyshire members,  as well as members from Lancs, N&E Yorks, Cheshire and Leics&Rutland joining us in Shipley Park.

It was quite a few horses first Derbyshire EGB ride too, and some riders and horses first ride after illness and injury.  The super weather and options of route made it perfect for you all.

Ruth Indiepics was on the 14km loop and here are a few of her favourite pictures.  All the photos are now available on her website.  If you missed her at this ride, don’t worry as we’ve secured her as our photographer for all our rides this year, so you’ll have the chance of one, (or lots!) of her great photos before the season is out.

Carsington 4

Thank you to first time organiser Gill and her team of helpers for organising and running this ‘sell out’ ride.

The sun shone, there was a sprinkling of snow in places and mince pie and carrot on our return.  A fab start to the Christmas season and our new ride season.

Derbyshire Dukeries Autumn Gold Social Ride in support of MADBAG (Matlock & District Bridleways Access Group)  Sunday 15th Oct 2017

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

95 riders enjoyed this super ride that started from Bakewell and took in quiet lanes, bridle paths and tracks through both Chatsworth and Haddon Estates.

Thank you to my co-organisers and stewards, especially Jonathan,  for all your time and effort in making this ride happen, and to the all the riders for your appreciative comments.   It proved to be a particularly tricky and troublesome ride to organise and run this year, so your kind comments on the day and on facebook are much appreciated.

Ruth Indiepics has again taken some stunning photographs and a view are shown above.  All the others are available to view on her website.

More photographs, taken by riders, can be seen on both our facebook page and on MADBAG’s.

We hope to have raised over £500 for MADBAG to help them continue their work with maintaining and improving the off-road access in this area.

A donation of over £200 will also be made to Peak Park for the use of Monsal Trail.

Okeover Air Ambulance Charity Ride – 24th Sept

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Jenny and Julie would like to thank the landowners, local farmers, our many helpers and all the 97 riders who came and enjoyed the day.  Thank you also to the generous entrants who couldn’t make it on the day but still agreed to donating their entry fees to the charity.  Figures are yet to be double checked but we look to have raised well over £1500 for Midlands Air Ambulance.

As usual we were blessed with both perfect weather and going.  I think the only hiccup was the totally unexpected non-arrival of the portaloo!

Indiepics has allowed us to share some of their favourite photos of the day.  Please see Indiepics website to view all the photos taken and to make your purchase.

Lindum Spirit Festival of Endurance 26th – 30th July

Lots of Derbyshire members attended the Emerald Green Feeds Lindum Spirit at Market Rasen Racecourse at the end of July.

Loads of events and activities took place over the 5 days and a link to the schedule is here – Lindum schedule 2017

Lindum spirit 2017 crew point

The Derbyshire Team Spirit 4×40 Relay team came a very creditable 3rd, with an average time of 12.5 kph.  Only just behind the 2nd team with 12.6 kph and the winning team with 13 kph.    Well done with three novice horses in the team.

Derbyshire members also enjoyed success in Lindum Digger, Roamer and Pleasure Pairs classes, as well as longer distance Graded Endurance Rides.

Derbyshire members were also involved with running Mini-Lindum Pony Club Camp, the Ride Office and helping with stewarding duties.

Full results can be found on the  website and official ride photos will soon be available on Westend Photography’s web site.  More comments and pictures of the event can be found on our Facebook page, Emerald Greens Facebook page and Lindum Spirit Facebook page.

Thank you to all the sponsors of the event, especially to the main sponsor Emerald Green Feeds, and to Thay Stephenson and her team of volunteers for making it happen.

Foremark Reservoir National Ride – 9th July 2017

Foremark Venue 2017

The weather was very warm and the horse flies were out in force for over 80 riders who took part in both Competitive and Pleasure rides on Sunday at Foremark.   Big thanks to Flick and her team of friendly helpers for making the day so successful.  Lots of happy riders and horses.

Graded Endurance Ride classes of 80km, 64km, 41km and 32km were run together with Pleasure Ride classes of 32km and 17km.

The routes offered plenty of off-road riding – open fields, tracks, bridleways, woodland paths and fabulous views.

The route can be seen here – Foremark ride map (1) and the maps for the canter tracks can be seen here –FOREMARK RIDER INFO 2017

Manifold in May  – 14th May 2017

Indie pics photographs of Manifold in May ride are now available.

Map of routes  – MANIFOLD MAP 2017

Over 60 riders ventured out into the beautiful Manifold Valley in glorious weather.  Two routes were on offer, 10 miles or 15 miles, both following the river bed and taking in the long , open fields path up to where the photographer and a windy checkpoint one were situated.  The routes then split here with the longer one following the very quiet lane through the ancient farmsteads of Throwley and Rushley.   We really were riding in the footsteps of the royals, both old and new, as  King Henry VIII is reputed to have had ties with Throwley Old Hall and Prince Charles regularly hunted in this valley too.

This area is very picturesque with cute cottages, trees in blossom, cattle and lambs and magnificent views everywhere.

Big thanks to Linda, Lissie and team for all your work in putting on this ride for us to enjoy.

Derbyshire members out and about May Day Bank Holiday Weekend.

It was a busy weekend on the EGB calendar with two National Rides on our doorstep –  Nottinghamshire Group’s Haywood Oaks on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and Leics and Rutland Group’s Silk Willoughby on Sunday.

Just a few snaps from some of our members taken over the weekend.

Shipley in Spring Social Ride – 25th March 2017

Thank you Carol and team for organising this super spring social ride.

The new large venue was excellent, as was the marking, the three routes on offer and of course the weather.

Three routes were available – 13.5km, 9km and 4km.  Riders could choose to ride any/all of them in any order or combination, up to a max of 26.5km.   Click this link to see a map shipley-map-2017

Nottinghamshire EGB Group – ‘Coloured Cob Social Ride’  12th March.

Derbyshire members enjoyed neighbouring EGB group’s social ride from the Coloured Cob Equestrian Centre in Cresswell, near Worksop on a very sunny and warm Sunday.  Don’t be confused and think you need to have a coloured cob to enter.

The route went past the ancient Cresswell Crags and then into the glorious woodlands of Welbeck and Clumber.   Some lovely opportunities to have a good long canter if you chose too.   Only a tiny bit of road on the longer route.

Notts Group are holding another Social ride here on 11th June, and I highly recommend it.

Thanks to Ruth of Indiepics for these photos of some Derbyshire members.

Ann and team again organised a very well run first ride of 2017.

A choice of three routes were available.  All on bridleways and tracks through woodland and the longer routes running alongside the river in picturesque Dimmingsdale.

This early ride is always very popular, with members and non-members alike, and was voted ‘Favourite Ride of 2016’.  This year was no exception and was the ride was full by the ride close date.

Photos are now available on Ruth Indiepics web site.

Here are a few taken by riders along the route.

Okeover Midland Air Ambulance Charity Ride 25th Sept.

We were again blessed by the weather gods for our annual charity ride held at Okeover Park near Ilam.  A big thank you to the Okeover Estate, The National Trust and the farmers who generously allow us to ride over their private land.

Jenny, Julie and their large team of happy helpers made sure everyone had an enjoyable day.  In 2015 this ride raised £855 for the Air Ambulance service  and we are hoping to beat that figure this year.  As soon as the accounts have been finalised we’ll publish the result.

Ruth from IndiePics was our official photographer and the photos are now available to view on her website.  Thank you Ruth, you’ve done us proud yet again. Here are a few for you to enjoy.

The Derbyshire Dukeries Social Ride 9th July 2016

bakewell july

Ruth of Indie Pics Photography had her work cut out at this ride,  battling the elements to capture some wonderful action shots.  See  for more.

Despite the weather 73 riders braved the elements and rode routes through Chatsworth and Haddon Estates and part of the Monsal Trail through Bakewell.   We had received nearly 100 entrants but as expected with the rain and ground conditions some people decided not to attend.  Luckily, the route rode really well and no one got stuck at the venue.  Thanks to Bakewell Show for allowing us to use the ‘Pony Club’ field at the last minute, thus avoiding us having to cancel.  Our organisers Jenny and Julie, have aged with the stress!

Huge thank you to all our gate stewards who helped make the day a success.

‘Buxton and Beyond’ Social Ride 12th June 2016

Thank you to the Dennett family and team of volunteers for running and manning this lovely ride.  Three route choices were offered, 8km, 20km and 27km.  All through the lovely and sometimes challenging country around Buxton and beyond.

The venue for this ride is great but unfortunately only small and we therefore have to limit numbers.  In the past this has never been an issue, but this year we had to close entries early because we’d reached capacity.  Thank you and so sorry to disappoint those  we just couldn’t fit in.

Lots of pictures on our web site and on the official photographer’s website Indiepics.

‘Manifold in May’ Social Ride – 15th May 2016

Another well organised and well marked ride from Linda Reeves and team.  The weather, scenery and going were all first rate.  In fact you could say Manifold in May is magnificent!

Around 60 riders took part, with the choice of a 16km or 22km ride.  I’m sure we all enjoyed the warm sunshine, the beautiful views and passing lots of trees in blossom.

Both routes followed the Manifold Trail alongside the river bed and then up into the Weaver Hills.  The shorter route split off at the top and returned to the venue via Calton, whilst the longer route took in Rushley.

All along bridleways, fields and quiet lanes.  Lovely opportunities for long, uphill canters were available.

Loads more lovely pictures on our Facebook Page.

‘Hartington in Hapril’ Social Ride – Saturday 9th April

Nearly 70 riders enjoyed this exciting new ride thanks to the work of Flick and her team . The sun shone, the daffodils were gently nodding their heads and the views were stunning.

The venue was Bagshaw’s auction field in Biggin and the 23km ride wound it’s way through this part of the countryside that is steeped in history.  We passed  through the pretty villages of Milldale, Alstonefield and Hartington and also through stunning  ancient landscape,  dotted with numerous tumulli.

Due to the recent heavy rainfall causing the river to look like a raging torrent,  the route was diverted to the bridge crossing.  Hopefully, next time we can use the river crossing.

Our photographer, Ruth of Indiepics, has now publishing her photographs please see her website

‘Shipley in Spring’ Social Ride   5th March 2016

Carol Counter and her team organised our second ride of the season, which managed to miss the previous day’s snow and even had some warmish sunshine.

The well marked 15km route, which could be ridden twice, followed good paths and tracks through the park, with some sprinklings of the promise that spring is on it’s way.

Ruth of IndiePics photographs has taken some great photos which are now available on her website.

These are just a few of my snaps that capture ‘Shipley in Spring’

‘Freehay in February’ Social Ride 21st Feb 2016

Thank you to Ann Harrison and her team for organising our first ride of the season.

Approx. 50 riders, members and non-members, took part in unexpected  and welcome dry weather!

Everyone I spoke to  thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s so nice to be back out again.

Two routes were on offer, both mainly on wooded bridle paths and tracks, with very little road work.  The longer route took us along the picturesque Dimmingsdale, through the woods and alongside the river.

The photographer was Ruth of , you’ll have seen her and her dog on the longer route.  The pictures will be on her web site very soon.

Three Derbyshire members and their crews made the trip down to Exmoor to take part in this year’s Golden Horseshoe Ride.  As well as being the 5oth Anniversary of the ride it could well be the last, unless a new organiser can be found.

The weather has apparently been very mixed, but mostly windy, cold and rainy with the odd heavy hail storm thrown in too.

Ann Harrison on Shoshana obtained a Gold Award in the Exmoor Extra class,  a  120km Graded Endurance Ride split into 3 days x 40km.  Their speed on Day 1 was 13kph, Day 2 12.9kph and Day 3 12.6kph.

Jenny Doxey on Bonnie Safira obtained a Silver Award, plus the Flynn Award, in the Exmoor Experience class, an 80km Graded Endurance Ride split into 2 days x 40km.  Their speed on Day 1 was 11.2kph and on Day 2 11.9kph.  Jenny found the ride very hard going at times and was delighted to have successfully completed it and won the Awards.  Saffy must have found it much easier, as she increased her speed on the second day!

Jenny and Saffy

Linda Reeves and Falah took part in the Exmoor Stag class, a 120km Graded Endurance Ride split over 2 days 80/40.  They completed the first day with a speed 0f 11.8kph, but unfortunately failed the final day 1 vetting on pulse.  I understand that Falah was happily cantering around when turned out the next day.
